Antique Victorian Gold Cross Locket Pendant Brooch with White Enamel and Pearls
Divine, Ancient.
The Victorians in the mid-nineteenth century were mad for ancient civilizations and their artifacts — anything and everything from the ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Etruscan, Celtic worlds, to name a few. Here, we have a large-scale revivalist locket brooch, circa 1870. At the center, an equilateral cross is highlighted with five creamy half pearls and white enamel. For ancient Greeks and early Celts, the arms of the cross represented air, fire, water, and earth — the elements of the universe. The brooch is further finely engraved with stylized crosses and endless knot motifs symbolic of infinity and strength, and is finished with gold granules on the perimeter. The final effect is luminous and dramatic.
The reverse holds a glass-fronted locket compartment, to house a personal memento. For versatility, we crafted a removable bail in the stylistic spirit of the brooch and added it to a pre-existing hinged loop. We are proud to have preserved the integrity of this beautiful jewel as it was found, while adding functionality.
Unmarked.
14k/15k gold (except for locket glass, glass frame, and pin); new removable bail is 14k gold, plated with 24k gold.
Dimensions and weight:
● 40 mm long (without bail); 50.7 mm long (including bail)
● 40 mm wide
● 8.5 mm deep
● 16.3 grams (total), 13.8 grams (without rim and glass)
