Antique French Victorian Diamond Bangle with Shell Motif
Antique French Victorian Diamond Bangle with Shell Motif
Dazzling, Elegant.
This French 19th century diamond bangle is, in a word, a stunner. Prepare to receive compliments. The front is completely covered with old mine and rose cut diamonds, for a dazzling display. The centerpiece is a good sized old mine cut diamond of .90 carat set in a stylized rayed and scalloped “shell”—flanked by an additional 6 old mine cut diamonds and at least 98 antique rose cut diamonds. We can’t help but think of Botticelli’s masterpiece “The Birth of Venus,” in which the goddess is borne to the seashore upon a large scallop shell.
Wear this as a “one-and-done” or layer with a simple diamond line bracelet (or two).
The bangle is hinged on two sides, for easy on-off. It closes securely, and includes an attached safety chain. The gold is yellow, with a hint of rose, typical for French gold of this period. The diamonds are set in silver over gold, also typical of the period.
Marked with French horse’s head and maker’s mark.
18k gold, silver, diamond.
Dimensions and weight:
● 16.2 cm / 6.4 inches inside circumference (approximately); 5.5 cm x 5 cm inside length and width
● 26.2 mm wide (center) tapering to 4.5 mm wide (back)
● 12 mm deep at deepest point
● 4.5 ctw diamond (including the center diamond of .90 ct). Center diamond is J/K color, I1 clarity; other old mine cuts are J/K colors, mixed clarities; rose cuts are H/I/J colors and mixed clarities.
● 36.7 grams
For reference, the bangle is shown on a 6 inch wrist.
Period: Victorian
*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present. Note that the center diamond is likely a replacement from some time ago, perhaps replacing an original pearl, given the shell motif. We definitely prefer the diamond!
