Big Hearted.

We love big hearts — and the drama of Victorian black mourning jewels. This has it all. This is the first mourning heart we have seen, and what a fine, large scale example it is! The dramatic black is adorned only by the soft sheen of the polished, hand carved onyx and a glinty rose cut diamond cluster. The heart is also a locket, with a gold framed hinged glass compartment on the reverse, ready to receive a personal memento.

We found the locket accompanied by the onyx and gold chain. They have been together so long that the heart’s gold bail has been grooved by more than a century of friction against the gold links of the onyx chain. We are charmed to see these tangible marks of a long life together.

We would wear these two pieces together, or to mix things up —- wear the heart on a period gold chain or even a ribbon. The onyx chain would look great in a layered stack of other antique chains or suspending another Victorian black mourning piece.

Marked with Dutch oak leaf (for 14k) on the locket and 14k on the chain.

Onyx, diamond, 14k gold (gold on heart tests closer to 15k)

Dimensions and weight:

Heart locket:

●       49 mm long (including bail)/38.2 mm long (just the heart)

●       36 mm wide

●       16.7 mm deep

●       22.5 grams

Chain:

● 21 inches long x 5 mm diameter on the beads, with an additional extender with spring ring of 2.75 inches for extra versatility.

● 18.4 grams total

Period: Victorian

*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present. Tiny chip near the tip of the heart, on the back side — very difficult to notice. The large gold bail of the locket shows grooves worn down by friction against the chain. Not readily noticeable when worn on a chain, and we personally do not think a repair is warranted as the bail is quite wide and sturdy — and we love the tangible evidence that this locket and chain have been lovingly worn together over so many years. We have also improved an antique repair to the interior of the locket that was under the blue paper.
