(SOLD) Antique French Early 19th Century Gold Book Vinaigrette Pendant
(SOLD) Antique French Early 19th Century Gold Book Vinaigrette Pendant
This is a vinaigrette, French and circa 1800-10, in the shape of a miniature book. Open the book to discover a perforated hinged lid — lift that to find a secret compartment. In the odiferous 19th century, this was meant to hold a tiny sponge soaked in scent. Its bearer would open the vingraigrette to mask unpleasant smells.
Today, wear this with a favorite perfume spritzed onto a piece of cotton tucked into the compartment. Or, consider this a locket to stash a personal keepsake.
We adore this vinaigrette — perfect for the perfume lover and the book lover. Such marvelous details! The two covers are embellished, complete with blank shield shaped cartouches, ready for personalization, if desired. Turn the book to the sides to examine the spine and the page edging details!
Marked with maker’s mark and French bear’s head, for 18k gold assayed in Paris (this is a rare mark; see “Les poinçons français des métaux précieux de 1789 à ce jour,” by Michael Fieggen, at page 17).
Chains and other book locket shown are not included.
