(SOLD) Antique, Rare "Bague Au Firmament" (Ring of the Heavens)
Coveted, Celestial.
We could not believe our good fortune to discover this bague au firmament (ring of the heavens) on our most recent trip to France.
These rings are often a holy grail piece for the collectors of Georgian era jewelry. Indeed, Marie Antoinette herself wore such rings (see detail of portrait of Queen Marie Antoinette by Adolf Ulrik Wertmüller, 1785).
Our bague au firmament is graced with a vivid cobalt blue glass panel, studded with 7 rose cut diamonds, evoking stars in the night sky. The central diamond is in the shape of a cleftless heart — so sweet — and all the diamonds are set in silver. The ring is otherwise a soft yellow gold with a touch of rosiness.
This rare treasure is a pleasure to behold and wear — it positively glows, and it looks and feels great on the hand, with the back curved perfectly to hug the finger.
Unmarked.
Dimensions and weight:
9k gold, blue “paté de verre” (glass), diamond.
● 25.3 mm long (plaque)
● 14.5 mm wide (plaque)
● US ring size 7.25 to 7.5
● 6.5 grams
Period: Georgian era (circa 1780-1800)
*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present. Vertical lines showing in the photos on the plaque are reflections from a window, not cracks (we have examined under 10x magnification). Please see video for additional views. We see areas of patina to the silver and gold, normal for rings of this age and construction. We have lightly cleaned some of the patina on the gold, but kept intervention to a minimum. Please take care not to submerge in liquid or use chemical or ultrasonic cleaners.
