Bold Carnelian Intaglio Ring of Bacchus' Panther and Thyrsus

$2,350.00

Big, Bold, Bacchic

For the bon vivant, we have a most deliciously rich Roman carnelian intaglio set in a more recent high karat gold band. The intaglio is of two attributes of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and revelry — the panther and the thyrsus (a wand tipped by a pine cone). The panther alludes to Bacchus’ wild nature and the thyrsus to fertility.

The carnelian intaglio is tactile, enticingly smoothed from age, and a beautiful shade of glowy orange that complements the warmth of the gold band.

This is such a chic, bold ring by shape, size, and color. Fabulous on the pointer or middle finger. The curviness and dimension of the ring are so complementary to the oval lozenge of the carnelian intaglio. Of course, we absolutely could not resist the Bacchic subject matter!

An impression of a Greco-Roman intaglio of the same theme is in the collection of the Louvre, at https://collections.louvre.fr/en/ark:/53355/cl010271958 (the original is in the Louis de Clercq Collection, catalog number 3262, at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris).

Marked with French owl.

18k, carnelian.

Dimensions and weight:

●  18.8 mm widest part of band tapering to 7.4 mm wide

● 8.3 mm deep (deepest point at the face of the ring) tapering to .5 mm deep at the back of the band

● 10.3 grams

● US size 9.5

Period: Roman (intaglio)/20th century (band).

*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present. Ring has been previously resized. Our jeweler does not recommend resizing.
