Antique Georgian Animal Fob Pendant with Citrine Intaglio (Motto "Essayez")
Antique Georgian Animal Fob Pendant with Citrine Intaglio (Motto "Essayez")
Empowering, Whimsical.
It is no secret that we are devoted fans of antique wax seal fobs. This one not only has a gorgeous and meaningful intaglio seal — it is also mounted in the most stunningly detailled setting of ornately chased gold.
First, let’s consider the intaglio — it is a brilliant, foiled citrine, carved with a coat of arms. The motto is a single word in the imperative, “Essayez” — meaning “Try” in French. This can mean “attempt” or “test/judge.” In either case, this is an empowering message indeed!
Now, to the cherry on top — the gorgeous gold mounting! An entire hunting scene is captured — with highly detailed depictions of various animals and foliage. We see a hound, a hare (turn the pendant for the effect of the hound chasing the hare — vice versa!), game birds, and another dog — all surrounded by scrolling foliage.
The fob is one of great beauty, whimsy, and sentiment —all on a large scale. This is truly one of the most special fobs we have had the pleasure to own.
Unmarked.
