Antique Spanish Gold Devotional Pendant with Painted Miniatures
Antique Spanish Gold Devotional Pendant with Painted Miniatures
Devotional, Cherished.
This summer, we traveled to northwestern Spain, visiting sites along the Camino Santiago, followed by Christian pilgrims for centuries. We seldom offer devotional jewelry, but when we do, it is because a piece appealed to us in an emotional way.
This is a double sided devotional pendant that reminded us of artwork often seen in the grand cathedrals in Europe, including during our travels along the Camino. A high karat gold filigree frame draws the eye to the double sided polychrome painted images of Christ.
We have seen similar pendants before, usually on a rather larger and showier scale. The relatively petite size of this one beckoned us, as it can be worn as part of a daily stack. In addition, once we tried it with a newly acquired lacy gold sautoir, we were hooked. They look marvelous together, but we think this would be beautiful on a simple chain, as well. At one time, this pendant was suspended from a rosary from Mallorca — precious and cherished.
Chain shown not included.
