Antique Glass Intaglio in Vintage Gold Mount Ring
Antique Glass Intaglio in Vintage Gold Mount Ring
This intaglio ring intrigued us from the get-go. The glass intaglio depicts 3 figures, one appearing to be quite small (a child?), with a disk on top of his head and two taller persons— one an older man with a cane or staff, and the other a younger adult.
We consulted with a couple of respected dealers of antique intaglios and the opinion is that the intaglio is Egyptian (from the Roman period). The scene is more enigmatic — perhaps an allegory of Fortune in the center, flanked by Wisdom and Charity. Or, it may be the sun god Ra, changing and aging as the day progresses.
We have not definitively identified the subject or origin of the intaglio, but we are offering this ring to its next custodian, who will appreciate this ring as the beautiful mystery it is.
The intaglio is set in a more recent (we think latter half of 20th century) substantial yellow gold mount, its simplicity relieved by palmette embellishments at the shoulders. The gold complements the rich, deep reddish brown (think cherry cola!) of the intaglio.
Gorgeous and dramatic on any finger — and a great conversation piece!
Marked 18k and unidentified maker’s mark.
16k to 17k gold (tests slightly under 18k, ranging between 16k and 17k), glass.
Dimensions and weight:
● 17. 2 mm long x 20.2 mm wide x 5.6 mm deep (at largest parts of the face)
● 12.6 grams
● US ring size slightly larger than 6.75
Period: 20th Century (with ancient intaglio)
