(SOLD) Antique Victorian Aesthetic Movement Silver Owl Locket and Collar
Wise, Wonderful.
We have seen many Victorian silver collars and lockets, and this set is one of our forever favorites. This fine specimen, circa 1879, is one from our own collection. One thing we love best about antiques is the pleasure of re-homing special pieces like this.
The centerpiece of the locket is the mystical owl, overlaid in yellow gold. The owl is exquisitely sculpted in high relief — body in profile, head turned to face forward. He is perched watchfully on a silver ground etched with a woodland scene. We adore owls — Athena’s symbol, representing wisdom and knowledge.
The collar is one of the most appealing we have had — complete with the dropper chain. We love the rivet details that impart such a modern look. The collar is supple and smooth, with a soft, velvety feel achieved only by years of loving wear.
The locket attaches to the collar via the bolt ring. Feel free to style the locket with another chain or ribbon. Or wear the collar on its own. Use the dropper chain in the “Y” formation as shown, or add it to the collar to extend the length. Use the two bolt rings to suspend other pendants or lockets. So versatile.
Marked on locket (inside and on the back) with UK hallmarks for sterling silver assayed in Birmingham, along with maker’s mark (ED), and date letter for 1879. Collar unmarked.
Silver.
Dimensions and weight:
● 58 mm long (locket)/19.5 inches long (chain, including bolt rings and dropper chain)
● 35 mm wide (locket)/ 16 mm wide (chain)
● 13 mm deep (locket)/3.5 mm deep (chain)
● 64.6 grams (total)/14.3 grams (locket)/50.3 grams (collar)
Period: Victorian
*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age commensurate wear may be present. We have cleaned, but not polished, the piece. No glass or removable rims are present in locket, but one side has a shallow lip to hold a photo in place. A few small, shallow impressions on the back of the locket, not detracting from beauty.
