Antique French Gold and Carnelian Intaglio Swivel Fob Pendant of Athena
Antique French Gold and Carnelian Intaglio Swivel Fob Pendant of Athena
Wise, Strong.
We adore intaglios, mythology, fobs, French jewelry, and jewelry with moving parts. In short, we love everything about this special swivel fob pendant!
A glowy lozenge of carnelian is cut in the shape of an elongated octagon (we can’t help but think of the Place Vendôme). Onto this, an artist has carved the most intricate, detailed intaglio scene of Athena. In ancient Greece, Athena was the goddess of wisdom, warfare, and handicrafts (in particular weaving and spinning) — exemplifying intelligence, strength, courage, strategy, and skill. Think the brains behind the Trojan Horse!
Here, Athena is shown in her battle armor — helmet, spear, and aegis shield. We are amazed to see the visage of Medusa on that tiny shield. Incredible! Reminiscent of Renaissance-era paintings of the goddess, Athena is shown here on a cloud, with three putti at her feet — and the entire charming scene is framed by a fanciful medieval-inspired archway and turrets.
Amazing amulet for the wise warrior woman in your life.
PS: Upon additional inspection, we think this may have Masonic associations, with a square and compass held by two of the putti.
French sautoir shown is not included.
Marked with French eagle’s head.
18k gold, carnelian.
Dimensions and weight:
● 49 mm long
● 30 mm wide
● 5.5 mm deep
● 13.5 grams
Period: Victorian/Edwardian
*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age commensurate wear may be present. The intaglio is in wonderful, crisp condition; the swivel component functions properly.
*For deliveries outside of the continental U.S., please contact us for shipping information.
