Antique Georgian Gold Chain with Ornate Turquoise Clasp
Antique Georgian Gold Chain with Ornate Turquoise Clasp
Quintessential, Regency.
To behold this chain is to marvel at its intricacy and strength. Triplets of textured gold loops are meticulously connected to another triplet to form a spiraled, rope chain. The finishing touch is an ornate barrel clasp — embellished with cannetille, grainetti, and turquoise.
The chain is supple and long enough to double— yet short enough to wear at its full length. In the early 19th century, ladies looped chains just like this one with a variety other jewels. We would do the same! Display the beautiful clasp to the front or side.
The gold is a rich yellow.
Unmarked.
18k gold (chain), 15k gold (clasp), turquoise.
Dimensions and weight:
● 39.5 inches long
● 4.5 mm wide and deep (chain)/ 7 mm wide and deep (clasp)
● 24.1 grams
Period: Georgian (circa 1820s)
*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present. Note: After a long search, we replaced the lighter colored barrel clasp found with the chain with this rare, period- and style-appropriate clasp that is a better color match — we mention this only for completeness. There is a small area of gold wire deficient encircling one of the turquoises at the clasp, not readily noticeable and normal wear for the age (see close up photo).
