(SOLD) Antique French 19th Century Locket Portrait Miniature of Cupid and Venus
(SOLD) Antique French 19th Century Locket Portrait Miniature of Cupid and Venus
Precious, Sentimental.
How striking is this French locket? Under a tree, Cupid is standing on one delicate tippy toe, eagerly reaching up to embrace his mother, the goddess Venus. This scene, painted en grisaille, is so tender and loving.
The portrait miniature is rendered in an elongated octagonal shape — framed in rose gold vermeil, and around that, an outer foliate frame surmounted by a bow, all set with glowy split pearls. The entire look and feel — from the shape, to the bow motif, to the portrait miniature — is a romantic revival of 18th century taste, done so well and beautifully, in the second half of the 19th century.
The locket compartment on the reverse is easily accessible by the hinged glass cover — ready to receive your personal memento.
We love this worn on a silk cord or ribbon.
Marked with French boar’s head for silver, assayed in Paris.
Silver, pearl, glass.
Dimensions and weight:
● 55 mm long
● 32 mm wide
● 6.8 mm deep
● 18.5 grams
Period: Victorian
*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present. One split pearl is deficient - at the top of the bow, adjacent to the loop (not noticeable unless searching for it).
*This item is available for shipping only within the U.S.
