The Victorians were keepers of sentiment and explorers of nature. Crescent moon brooches were immensely popular. This is a very fine quality diamond and gold crescent moon brooch, circa 1890, set with 69 old mine and Old European cut diamonds of white G color, to dazzling and sparkling effect. The largest diamond is approximately .40 carat. Perhaps most distinguishing of all, the outline of this crescent brings to mind the profile of a man in the moon. The brooch features a brooch fitting that is secured with a tiny screw and is removable. A bail has been recently added, so this can be worn as a pendant when the brooch fitting is unscrewed and removed.
