(SOLD.) Antique Georgian Ruby and Diamond Giardinetti Cornucopia Brooch/Pendant

$0.00
Sold

A rare early jewel of great refinement and elegance, circa 18th century, third quarter. Flowers spill forth from a fluidly rendered cornucopia, a symbol of fortune and fertility. The look and spirit is elegant and feminine, crafted with an assured light touch. Gemstones totaling approximately 2.5 ctw are utilized to wonderful effect, with the subtle sparkle of antique rose cut diamonds contrasted by vibrant Burmese rubies. Characteristic of jewels of the era, the diamonds are set in silver, and the colored gemstones — here, rubies — are set in gold. The brooch is closed backed, in gold.

See "Georgian Jewellery" by Dawes and Collings for examples of period gemstone cornucopia and giardinetti jewelry. See also 18th century cornucopia jewelry in the collection of The British Museum.

This jewel may have started life as a hair ornament or similar, but in antiquity, a C-catch brooch fitting was added. Minute traces of soft solder are visible upon close inspection, not affecting the overall beauty of the piece. More recently, a hidden gold bail was expertly added, for extra versatility to wear as a pendant.

Unmarked.

Silver, 14/15k gold, diamond, ruby.

Dimensions and weight:

●  34 mm long

●  18.5 wide

● 2.7 mm deep

● 8.3 grams

● 1.43 ctw diamond; 1.08 ctw ruby

Period: Georgian

*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present.
