Coin jewelry is timeless, and this is a lovely example. A French 40 franc coin, dated 1811, bearing the visage of Napoleon Bonaparte, is mounted in a later, circa 1900, frame with a brooch fitting. The frame is so beautifully crafted, embellished with rose cut diamonds in platinum and creamy pearls.
The coin itself has so much to tell us: engraved by Jean-Pierre Droz, struck by the Paris Mint in 1811 during Napoleon’s reign as French emperor, a lofty status he achieved through military victories — symbolized here by the laurel leaf crown and wreath. 40 franc coins bearing Napoleon’s image were made between 1802 and 1813, and following Napoleon’s final defeat in 1815, many were melted down. It is a pleasure to find one in this wonderful condition, in such a fine jeweled setting. This is truly wearable history. To think, this coin was in circulation during the Napoleonic Wars!
