(SOLD) Antique French Victorian Era “M” Monogram Gold and Onyx Pendant with Locket Compartment

(SOLD) Antique French Victorian Era “M” Monogram Gold and Onyx Pendant with Locket Compartment
SOLD at pre-list.
Dramatic, Compelling.
We were captivated by the bold shape and scale of this French 19th century pendant — the cartouche shape, along with the beautiful cursive “M” monogram accented with 12 rose cut diamonds. The M for “Mother” or “Mama” came immediately to mind.
The onyx body is hand carved, topped by a gold and enamel bail set with a single rose cut diamond.
On the reverse, a glass fronted lift out locket compartment with gold frame would accommodate a personal memento. (See note below). Originally intended as a memorial locket.
Wear this on a thick antique gold chain or collar, a black ribbon, or if one is fortunate to have one, a carved black onyx collar.
Chain shown is not included.
Marked with French eagle’s head and maker’s mark.
18k, rose cut diamond, onyx, enamel.
Dimensions and weight:
● 61 mm long (including bail)/ 47 mm long (not including bail)
● 37.5 mm wide
● 8.7 mm deep
● 22 grams (total)
Period: Late Victorian
*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present. We observe some minor enamel loss at the bail, and tiny edge wear, most notably at around 10 o’clock of the pendant. In addition, we have not opened the locket back, which we recommend having a professional jeweler open if/when use of the locket is desired.
