Roman Coin Gold Signet Ring, of Constantine the Great (306-337 AD)
Roman Coin Gold Signet Ring, of Constantine the Great (306-337 AD)
Found in Rome: A patinated coin featuring the Roman emperor Constantine I (306-337 AD) mounted in a hand made gold signet setting, combining ancient history with modern elegance.
Constantine I (the Great) was one of the most historically significant Roman emperors -- the first to convert to Christianity and the founder of Constantinople, the new capital of the empire. Constantine minted coins with his image alongside symbols commemorating events of his rule. Here, the front of the coin bears a bust of Constantine, helmeted, with laurel crown; on the reverse, two winged "Victories" face each other, holding a shield over an altar. We have seen similar examples of this coin online dating to circa 318/19 or thereabouts.
Set into a substantial modern gold signet, this ancient coin is now a piece of fine jewelry, as well as a wearable artifact of history.
We adore the contrast of the aged, patinated coin and the high polished yellow gold, and the perfect imperfection of the hand made setting. The scale is bold, but not overwhelming. Fabulous on any finger of the hand -- we favor it on the pointer or pinky. And have we mentioned it is super comfy? Love!
Marked 750 on the shank.
18k, likely bronze on the coin.
