This 18th century mourning band is as old as the United States, dating to July 1776. It commemorates:“Sr John Gibbons Bart died 8 July 1776 aged 56” (the “Sr” refers to “Sir” and “Bart” refers to “Baronet”).
To think — this ring been reposing in its box all the while as the US experienced the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the Great Depression, the Civil Rights Movement, and beyond.
This band is slim, in exceptionally well preserved condition. It is accompanied by (we believe) its original box — always a major plus for collectors.
Marked with maker’s mark of “FP”.
18k gold, enamel.
