(SOLD/LAYAWAY) Antique Georgian Eternal Love Mourning Ring (“The Higher I Fly, the Tighter I Tie”)
This is a sentimental ring, with a late 18th century plaque and a later shank. The plaque displays a scene of two birds. One is in flight, the other perched on a tree trunk. The two are connected by a string held between their beaks, tied with an infinity or love knot. The sentiment conveyed is of “The farther the distance, the tigher the bond” or “The higher I fly, the tighter I tie.”
The birds are symbolic of two souls, joined together. The distance can be interpreted as a separation of physical distance or between this life and the next. In this instance, the cut down tree trunk is a symbol of a life cut short, confirming that this is a mourning piece.
This was acquired as a conversion piece, done well.
Unmarked.
14k/15k gold (shank), 9k/10k gold (plaque).
Dimensions and weight:
26.6 mm long (face of ring)
14.5 mm wide (face of ring)
4.2 mm deep
4.1 grams
US ring size 7
Period: Georgian and Victorian
*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present.
