This is an early cut-steel quizzing glass, circa 1780-1800, popular in the 18th and first decades of the 19th centuries. The handle has a romantic heart motif, and the cut steel “gemstones” are faceted. This kind of quizzing glass would have been worn by Georgian-era gentlemen and ladies as a fashion accessory, as much as a visual aid, on chains or ribbons. Wear this on a long chain or silk or leather cord.
