Antique French/Flemish Regional Gold and Diamond Cross Pendant
Antique French/Flemish Regional Gold and Diamond Cross Pendant
Golden, Lace.
We love regional jewelry — often pieces making the most of small quantities of precious metals and gemstones and cherished through generations in a family.
Here, we have a beautiful stylized cross pendant, in two articulated sections, circa early 19th century. The cross is gold, with silver accents, embellished with flinty old diamonds, including 1 table cut. This type of cross was often Flemish, but also worn in northern France and Normandy.
Some of these crosses had a third, top section, with two flat loops in the back. Perhaps at one time, this one also had a third section, but the cross was divided at some time long ago to distribute between children as an inheritance.
An example of this type of jewel can be seen at page 152 of Georgian Jewellery by Ginny Redington Dawes and Olivia Collings.
French chain shown not included.
Marked with unidentified animal head gold marks (could be French horse’s head) and other, lettered marks.
14k gold (some areas test higher), silver, diamond.
Dimensions and weight:
● 57 mm long
● 33 mm wide
● 6.5 mm deep (at deepest point)
● 6.2 grams
Period: Late Georgian/Early Victorian
*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present. Note there are signs of antique repair, with minute amounts of lead solder at the top loop, not readily discernible or detracting from the beauty or charm of this antique piece.
