(SOLD) Vintage Large and Substantial French "Plus Qu'hier, Moins Que Demain" Love Medallion by A. Augis
A particularly lovely and substantial love medallion by French goldsmith, A. Augis. The medallion is framed by a dimensional and detailed reed-bound floral and laurel garland border, evocative of the era of Louis XVI. It feels and looks significant and weighty in hand, at 14.5 grams of rich 18k gold. We have seen many examples of this beloved medallion, and this is the heaviest that we have had the pleasure to offer.
The medallion’s sentimental message is expressed in the form of a rebus, inspired by the 1889 poem by Rosemonde Gérard to her husband, Edmond Rostang, author of "Cyrano de Bergerac”:
Car, vois-tu, chaque jour je t’aime davantage,
Aujourd’hui plus qu’hier et bien moins que demain.
(For, you see, each day I love you more,
Today more than yesterday and less than tomorrow.)
The medallion is accompanied by its original book-shaped cream colored presentation box, imprinted with the poem’s excerpt on the inside “cover.”
Marked “A. Augis” on the face, maker’s mark in lozenge and French eagle’s head on loop, “Deposé” on the back.
18k gold, diamond, ruby (presumed synthetic).
Dimensions and weight:
● 39 mm long (including loop and bail)
● 27.3 mm diameter
● 2.8 mm deep
● 14.5 grams
Period: 20th century
