(SOLD) Antique Georgian Carved Mother of Pearl and Gold Vinaigrette Pendant
Rare, Luminous.
This is a vinaigrette, circa 1800 — meant to contain a tiny sponge soaked in scent, to refresh the senses of its wearer during daily encounters in the malodorous 19th century. This example takes the shape of a covered woven basket, carved in exquisite detail from luminous mother of pearl and finished with a pierced grill and twisted wire handle, both in gold. The grill is hinged in the center, opening on both sides, and the basket handle cleverly functions as a bail. A marvelous work of art in miniature and a remarkable survivor over two centuries.
We love this worn on an antique rope chain.
Chain shown is not included.
Unmarked.
14k/15k gold, mother of pearl.
Dimensions and weight:
● 21 mm long
● 22.5 mm wide
● 10 mm deep
● 3.3 grams
Period: Georgian
*Please note that all dimensions and weights are approximate. Age-commensurate wear may be present.
*This item is for delivery within the U. S. only.
